Ellen Gallagher

Artist Influences

American artist, Ellen Gallagher, claims that the process of repetition (similar to Hirst and Herring) and revision is central to her work. Pieces usually involve the treatment of advertisements found in African American focused publications. Gallagher’s biracial ethnicity evidently influences her work, as many pieces are often related to race.

Similarly to Hirst’s spot painting, Gallagher’s use a grid-like formation. Each grid includes over 60 prints that employ various techniques, such as collage, cutting, lithography, and silkscreen.

I appreciate the feminist undertone related to Gallagher’s work, because she takes images from published journals and magazines an almost dehumanises them, especially with the removal of the eyes. However, this does however make the figure more detached, and because the image is manipulated with collage, it almost feels like the female image is objectified because the images are made to be similar and generic. Nevertheless, the use of advertising also, like Beyoncé’s performance, presents the power of language. Therefore, future works could include a speech or text on screen, if I continue with video.
